Introduction
In the recent past, Kenya has embarked on innovative measures in an effort to transform and improve the travel and transport sector. Such measures include expansion of airport operations, transformation of Matatu and railway service operations among others. However, if such transformations are not properly planned and managed the sector may not be sustainable in the long-run. Hence this MSc. Programme in Travel and Transport Services Management aims at producing a human resource with requisite expertise to manage these transformations and provide solutions to the real-world challenges confronting travel and transport sector both at local, regional and international levels. Additionally, the programme provides students with an opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills, attitude and competencies required to meet various transportation needs, including; use of ICT in travel and transportation, competitiveness in travel business, road safety in the wake of increasing road accidents, and efficiency in public transportation services. Graduates from the programme will have competencies required in developing strategies that will guarantee economic sustainability, safety of commuters and sound customer service in transportation. Further, graduates will be expected to apply the acquired knowledge to both public and private enterprises, including; travel agencies, tour firms, national and regional tourism organizations, public institutions such as Ministry of Tourism and Information, recreation facilities, entertainment centers, transport firms, Kenya Maritime Authority, Kenya Transport Authority, Ports, Airports, National Transport Safety Authority, clearing and forwarding agencies, among others.
Entry requirements
To be admitted into the MSc. in Travel and Transport Service Management programme, the applicants must meet the following requirements:-
- A holder of a degree in travel, tourism, business or commerce from a University recognized by Moi University Senate with first class or second upper class honors; or
- A holder of a degree in travel, tourism, business or commerce from a University recognized by Moi University Senate with second class lower honors and two (2) years working experience; or
- A holder of a degree in any social science discipline from a University recognized by Moi University Senate with at least second class lower honors with a Diploma in travel, tourism, business studies validated by Moi University Senate; or
- A holder of a degree in any discipline from a University recognized by Moi University Senate with at least second class lower honors with three (3) years working experience in the transport sector.
Programme duration
A candidate may be registered as a full-time student for the MSc. in Travel and Transport Services Management for a minimum of Two (2) years and a maximum of Four (4) years.
A candidate may be registered as a part-time student for a minimum of Three (3) years and a maximum of Five (5) years. Registration will be reviewed from time to time by the School Graduate Studies Committee. Continuance of registration will depend on evidence of satisfactory progress.
