Introduction

The School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events management (STHE) was created in October, 2012 out of School of Business and Economics (SBE) to become the new School in the university, with three departments, hosting a number of programmes; Six (6) Diploma programmes, Three (3) degree programmes and  Six (6) Postgraduate programmes. The school is one of the largest and most comprehensive of tourism and hospitality management schools in Kenya and to a large extent, the East African region. The school is at the forefront in bridging training needs and gaps identified in Kenya Vision 2030, National Tourism Policy, and the Ministry of Tourism’s Strategic Plan with regard to the context of the nation’s tourism industry through knowledge, competencies and skills requisite in the management of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry in Kenya.  It aims at offering insights into the real-world problems and issues confronting the tourism industry and; the travel and tour operations, hotel & hospitality and event management sectors, in particular, at the local, regional and international level. The school also has competent faculty members who are all round in practical and theoretical areas of tourism and hospitality.

Through innovative teaching and learning approaches, such as, Problem Based Learning (PBL), industry-aligned exposure, globally-mapped approach and seasoned doctors and professors, the departments within the school continue to: promote international tourism, travel and hospitality research and development; produce internationally-oriented graduates, service providers and travel, tourism and hospitality managers; mobilize resources for travel and tourism training and research; provide staff and students with current travel and tourism industry information; and forge and sustain close collaborations with key stakeholders in the service field of travel, tourism and hospitality, as envisioned in Kenya Vision 2030 and the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).

The outcome of this commitment has been the relentless supply of competent human resources to: airlines, marketing departments, human resource departments, tour operation companies, travel agencies, a diversity of hospitality establishments, Kenya Wildlife Service, conservancies and conservation organizations, local and international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Ministry of Tourism, Kenya Tourist Board, museums and cultural centres, community-based organizations (CBOs), man-made attractions such as Haller Park, tourism training institutions and many other organizations that are largely service-oriented.
