Doctor of Philosophy in Tourism Management

Introduction

Doctor of Philosophy in Tourism Management entails training tourism professionals in the areas of tourism research, planning, product development, sustainable development, marketing and management. The programme aims to produce tourism management professionals who are practical, analytical, and collaborative in approach and with a distinct cutting edge in issues related to tourism. The graduates of this program are targeted to contribute to an efficient and effective tourism management system that will serve the local, regional and international community. It is expected that after completion of the training, the graduates will be equipped with knowledge and skills essential to carry out tourism research and spearhead tourism development and management on sustainable basis in Kenya and beyond. Again, the graduates will be well prepared for careers in universities or research-based agencies.

Entry Requirement

To be admitted into the PhD in Tourism programme, the applicant must fulfil academic requirements as prescribed by Moi University:

  1. Holder of a Master's degree of Moi University in the relevant field, or
  2. Holder of a relevant Master's degree of any other University recognized by Moi university Senate, or
  3. Holder of other qualifications considered by Moi University Senate as equivalent to a relevant Masters degree.

Programme duration

A candidate may be registered as a full-time student for the PhD in Tourism Management for a minimum of Three (3) years and a maximum of Five (5) years. A candidate may be registered as a part-time student for a minimum of Four (4) years and a maximum of Seven (7) years. Registration will be reviewed from time to time by the School Graduate Studies Committee. Continuance of registration will depend on evidence of satisfactory progress. The total number of lecture hours and units required for graduation shall be 228 and 51 respectively.
